Have you noticed how your skin and scalp becomes dryer in winter, most noticeably your scalp? Your hair is drier, more static and breaks more easily? The obvious reasons are because the air is dry/er (particular in the southern most states of Australia). We naturally tend to wear more layers of clothing heating up our bodies, we drink less water not wanting to feel cold, our houses, cars, workplaces, and shopping centres are all heated, and we use hotter water in the shower removing the natural oils called sebum from the scalp. All of this contributes to dehydrating the skin and scalp and contributing to irritation and flare ups of dry scalp and dandruff.
7 personal tips that I follow to support my scalp and hair -
invest in a soft bristle brush, brush your hair from the scalp to the ends of the hair every day - this helps to exfoliate your scalp and increase blood circulation, as well as distribute natural oils through your hair to protect it and make it shine.
use shampoos and conditioners that are prescribed to suit your type of hair and scalp condition - the wrong one or sometimes too much or not enough of the correct one will cause problems.
check the ingredients of shampoos and conditioners to ensure they have no nasties in them - things like sulfates, parabens and silicones, to name a few.
give yourself a head massage while the conditioner is in - use the pads of your fingertips to create firm but gentle circular movements directly on the scalp. This helps create a healthy environment for hair growth and supports you to release tension from the head area.
make the water temperature cooler when rinsing shampoo and conditioner - it doesn’t have to be cold just not super hot.
invest in a hair masque for extra hydration and repair - Bhave has both in salon treatments and ones you can take home, including ones that tone and maintain your colour. A conditioner is great to close down the cuticle and protect the hair but a masque will address damage and provide extra nourishment.
use a hair wraps instead of a towel - Bhave has a microfiber Hair Turban that dries your hair faster and protects it from damage. I put this on after my shower while I apply my makeup, and before I blowdry.
Let me know how you go with these tips and please reach out if you have any questions, is there something you would like me to explain further?
Also, let me know what Hot Tip for Hair you would like me to share next?
